Cebu Pacific to provide airlift support to wounded soldiers, cops in Marawi

Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB) will be providing airlift support to military and police personnel wounded in action (WIA) in Marawi City. On top of the free airlift on Cebu Pacific flights, the WIA government troops will also get baggage allowance of up to 40 kilograms.

In cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), this initiative aims to augment air support by the Philippine Air Force by helping move wounded government troops from field hospitals in the area to larger medical facilities of the AFP and PNP. Through this, field medical stations can be declogged, giving way for wounded soldiers and police personnel who need immediate medical attention.

"It is with deep gratitude that we accept this kind gesture of support by Cebu Pacific led by its President and CEO, Mr Lance Gokongwei, in the airlift of our heroes Wounded in Action in Marawi. This will not just afford our troops immediate treatment in hospitals that offer better facilities to aid their speedy recovery, but a meaningful gesture to make your Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines feel that their sacrifices are being recognized and appreciated," says Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo, Chief of the AFP's Public Affairs Office.

The officers and rank-and-file of the Philippine National Police and our families are grateful for this magnanimous expression of kindness and compassion by the management of Cebu Pacific to provide life-saving medical evacuation to policemen who are wounded in fighting local terrorists in Mindanao. This is not the first time that Cebu Pacific extended a helping hand to our troops. We cannot thank them enough for keeping the Filipino spirit of ‘Bayanihan’ alive in such crucial time of emergency,” says Police Chief Superintendent Dionardo Carlos, Chief of the PNP Public Information Office.

WIA government troops who are fit enough for commercial flights can be accommodated on Cebu Pacific flights from Cagayan de Oro (Laguindingan Airport), and flown to any CEB domestic destination. Currently, Cebu Pacific has direct flights from Cagayan de Oro to Bacolod; Tagbilaran, Bohol; Cebu; Davao; Iloilo and Manila. By July 26, CEB will also fly direct between Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga City.

On top of the airlifting of WIA government troops, CEB is also airlifting cargo of relief goods and other humanitarian assistance for affected residents. Donors may coordinate with the GMA Kapuso Foundation or the Philippine Business for Social Progress for packing and transport arrangements of their donated goods.

Cebu Pacific will continue to provide free cargo support for relief goods and other essential items for displaced residents of Marawi City  and adjacent areas from various organizations, most notably the Department of Social Welfare and Development. These include food and water; medicines; bandages; clothing and other necessities. The airline has provided equipment support to the Office of Civil Defense in the transport of humanitarian assistance.

Turning brushing a fun activity

Brushing teeth is something that we need to do three times a day for health reasons. Yet many people still miss on doing this for different reasons.

Sometimes, our kids also have a hard time doing this so parents should really make sure to guide them and see to it that this is fulfilled every meal.

Now, how can you make brushing more fun for the family especially for the kids? Here are some suggestions:

1. Provide your children a toothbrush to play with. Let him/ her brush his stuffed toy animal or doll's teeth while you brush his.

2. Let your kids brush your teeth, using your toothbrush of course. (Don't forget to do it again yourself later.)

3. Cheer with each tooth brushed as if it's one exciting event.

4. Use a brush that has their favorite characters.

The gift of healthy ‘crowning glory’ fit for the queen this Mother’s Day

CLICHE it may be, but there’s indeed a woman behind the person we are today. And that’s no less than her—our mother. We used to call her nanayinay‘naymama, mommy or simply mom. Needless to say, she deserves more than that given the pivotal role she fulfills in rearing us from childhood to adulthood and possibly for the rest of our lives.

There may be opposing beliefs whether that greater maternal instinct is biologically predetermined or socially imposed, but everyone would agree that a mother is hardwired to love and care about the whole family, especially the children, all the time. For better or worse, it’s always the welfare of everyone at home on top of her priority.
No wonder she’s an epitome of a doting human being that touches everybody’s life. So, it’s but right to honor and return all the favors she has done for us. And what a better way to do this than this Mother’s Day.

Still drooling over the ways on how to spend this time of the year again with her? Well, you may opt for the basics of gift-giving from simple trinkets to expensive items. But take note, your appreciation of her is not equated by the tag price of your present. It’s the thought that counts, as an adage says.

You may consider a set of hankies that will bring back the memory of her wiping out her tears of happiness upon knowing that she’s conceiving a li’l creature inside her womb. That’s you, of course. A loose yet comfy clothes shall make her remember that sort of a duster or preggy dress she wore in the laborious yet exciting “nine months” of gestation.

Why not a pillow that she could hug as tight as she embraced you after giving birth, or maybe a brassiere for protection of the very bosom she fed you with during infancy? A bed will bring to her mind your tot years when you started to crawl and roll over it freely.

Shoes are a girl’s best friend, too, like your mom. Either sky-high heels or flattering flats, there’s a pair to match every bit of her fantasy. For as long as it brings comfort to her feet, it's more than enough to reciprocate the ease you had when you took your first walk with her guidance back then. If it isn’t her thing, though, a flip-flop will cause her to think that she also disciplined you through the proverbial “rule of slipper” hit on your buttocks while you were growing up.

Much to her delight, a bling ring will be worthy of your dear investment to show your deep appreciation of her just like when she never failed to recognize you with a pat on the back for simple good deeds or a job well done in your lifetime.

Stuck for an idea yet? Here’s a simple but meaningful token of gratitude that for sure will make a big difference and, eventually, pull off a surprise for the celebrant herself: The NOVUHAIR 3-in-1 pack which includes the topical scalp lotion, herbal shampoo and conditioner. Yes, you read it right.

Still not convinced enough, why don’t you spray a liberal amount of NOVUHAIR topical scalp lotion onto your mom’s scalp and massage it for five to ten minutes. You may not even know that with such a plain gesture of yours, it can melt her heart as it reminds her of the past when she used to do the same thing while you were still young, either as a trick to put you easily on a slumber or merely a relief every time you got sick. Those caressing hands of yours, likewise, imbibe your act of giving back the “natural care from mothers” like her.

Whatever impression it may have on her, what’s tangible she could gain is that you’re giving her nature’s gift of health. NOVUHAIR Topical Scalp Lotion is so unique that it combines 19 natural herbs, essential oils and co-factor nutrients––all working synergistically to help address hair problems from growth to vanishing. This breakthrough product helps to rejuvenate, nourish and maintain the moist of her tress from root to tip, aids in stimulating the growth of her hair and helps prevent it from excessive falling, while improving the overall appearance.

More than anything else, NOVUHAIR 3-in-1 pack may be one of the most precious gifts that your mom could ever receive in her entire life. Well, she’s the most important woman in your life after all. Hence, she deserves to be treated like a queen with that vibrant, bouncy and shiny “crowning glory.”

NOVUHAIR 3-in-1 pack is beyond compare. So, don’t think twice to wrap it as your present for her this Mother’s Day and, if ever, for life. Head on to any Mercury Drug and other leading drugstores to get a dose of nature’s answer to hair loss.  For inquiries, call 413-6570 or 0922-8830575, and visit www.novuhair.com for more details. A Delicate Balance: A Window to the Batanes Way of Life

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) describes Batanes as "A blend of breathtaking scenery, abundant biodiversity and rich cultural heritage."

Once you experienced Batanes, there are not enough superlatives to describe the beauty of Batanes, the country’s northernmost and smallest province.

The popular images of Batanes are those of breathtaking verdant landscapes and blue waters, alternately agitated and calm. These northernmost Philippine islands have long been part of a traveler’s must-go-and-experience list.  But Batanes is more than just a weekend getaway.

“A Delicate Balance: Batanes Food, Ecology and Community” reveals why. A project of The Museo ng Kaalamang Katutubo (MusKKat), this handsome book explores how food, ecology, nature, and tradition, have shaped the Ivatan way of life in the last 4,000 years.  It also explains too that the Ivatan and the Itbayat, people of the Batanes, knew well how to husband resources through aeons, without depleting or otherwise compromising nature.

While the authors, Corazon S. Alvina and Marian Pastor Roces, make sure to point out that food habits are radically changing, particularly with thorough-going links with the cash economy now in place, there remains more than enough facets of the old nature-and-culture system to recognize its form and its reasons for enduring.

Complemented with insightful photographs by Neal Oshima, the book shows the intricate but robust relationships within the communities of the Batanes, and how traditional Ivatan and Itbayat food is interconnected with the islands’ microsystems.  In one of the notes in the book, Roces writes that while “A Delicate Balance: Batanes Food, Ecology and Community” is a food book, it is not necessarily a food book. Food is only an access point into the Batanes human-in-biosphere ecosystem.

Officially launched last November 2016, the book is a result of the collaboration with, and the consolidation of the substantive research work of, archaeologists, anthropologists, boat makers, botanists, Ivatan experts and cooks, a professional urban chef, nutritionists, geologists, sea current specialists, and zoologists. Get a copy of “A Delicate Balance: Batanes Food, Ecology and Community” via www.phfoodecosystems.com for only P3,850.

Midea Gas Ranges: Withstanding the test of Filipino-style cooking

Whenever Filipinos are preparing for a big celebration, whether it is for birthdays, fiestas or family reunions, the kitchen sure gets so busy with all the cooking that needs to be done. All hands are on deck as all available chopping boards are brought out and batches of ingredients go through knives before getting them in the pots. While some ingredients are boiled or steamed before they are combined with the other ingredients to complete the dish, there are some that gets the heat treatment by frying, grilling, or roasting. This is how Filipinos do their feasts as one big community or one big family, helping each other, and then finally bonding over the dishes that they labored for.

A lot of kitchen appliances get battered every time there is a big feast coming up, especially the gas stoves and ranges, because they catch all the mess from pots dripping with sauces that usually get caked on the surfaces. This could rust the body or some other parts of the stove and eventually affect its performance and eventually cause it to become unusable. The world’s leading manufacturer of consumer appliances, Midea understands the nature of how serious Filipinos are when it comes to cooking meals for their feasts. The varied culinary influences the country got from the Chinese, Malay, Spanish and other contemporary cuisines has kept the Filipinos’ passion for cooking burning bright, as some age-old traditions are being passed down, rediscovered, and reinvented by the younger generation.

Younger families who trace their roots from far-flung provinces are bringing in their family’s tradition to their very own homes, where there might be not enough open space for a fire pit for roasting and grilling, or those big and heavy gas ranges that could fire up a big wok and take in enough volume of food enough for a good portion of the family clan or barangay. Luckily, these young generations of families could still continue to enjoy and pass on further their family’s great recipes with Midea’s newest lineup of gas ranges that are specially designed to surprisingly withstand the test of Filipino cooking. They have three models, two of which has an oven volume of 58L, while the other has a bigger one with 65L, each of which could accommodate 4 pans and pots cooking simultaneously. These sizes are more than enough to take in big batches of liempo or fish to grill, or a big slab of pork belly, rolled into a porchetta stuffed with tanglad and other ingredients that makes a lechon flavorful.

The 65L model has its own thermostat, which makes it easier for any home chef to control the temperature in the oven and serve only the best home-cooked Pinoy favorites. It could even function as a rotisserie, so that it could cook any kind of meat evenly and perfectly. And with its tempered glass lid, monitoring your culinary specialty with the gas range door closed is a breeze. While all of the models are using SBT burners to make every cooking experience safe, the 65L model even has a flame failure device to keep gas from building up within the appliance. These features do not only assure the safety of everyone and getting every family member involved and to bond in the kitchen, they also enable  Midea’s gas ranges to be handed down to the next generation.

Cooking in large volumes and very frequently could lead to a burnout, with gas tanks running out of fumes to keep you going. One of the 58L models has a hot plate where it uses electricity to heat up the pans and allows you to cook. This could be helpful in keeping the whole kitchen running, even if it is just one stove cooking and everyone is taking a quick break to wait for an LPG refill or replenishment. After everything is done and everyone in the family, friends, or guests are satisfied with the feast, cleaning up the Midea’s gas ranges is absolutely friendly because its body is made out of tough stainless steel.

Midea is also confident in giving their customers a 2-year warranty on parts and labor along with a 5-year warranty on burners. This could only mean that Midea’s lineup of gas ranges are there to stay in the kitchen for a very long time, dealing with more hard core cooking, Filipino-style for the years to come. With that much time, another younger generation of family members will be ready to take on the family tradition and hopefully pass on the cooking torch as well.

Mom’s love and Gardenia make a pocket full of fun, filling treats for kids

We know that Mom stands for “Master Of Making-things-work-out.” And the cliché of the tired moms doing all of these chores, cooking, and taking care of the kids has evolved into an empowered woman who could still do everything in house but still manages to work with their chosen career paths, whether they go to the office or work from home. Busy as she is juggling various roles, from taking care of the household to also providing whatever the whole family needs, she is best known for her foremost role: to be a loving, caring, giving mother.

But being a “M-O-M” is no easy feat, and sometimes, moms do need some help in order to make things work out with not just paying the bills, helping out in bringing some food on the table, or sending their kids to school. Most importantly, moms are expected to be there for their children, in taking care of them and witnessing the milestones that their children achieve— showing much of their love for their kids. When kids are attending school or having some fun times with their playmates, they could only feel their mom’s love most of the time with the “baon” she prepares for them.

Moms could whip up some meals that her kids will definitely love because of how very well she knows her children, but when she is pressed with the time needed to prepare she would definitely find a great ally in Gardenia-- a soft, freshly-baked bread that is great-tasting and nutritious. Helping hardworking moms everywhere to show their kids a pocket full of fun and a mother’s love, the country’s leading bread maker now introduces its newest product that kids will surely enjoy --the Gardenia Pocket Sandwich.

Made with two slices of soft and luscious white bread, Pocket Sandwich has no edges and is perfectly sealed, making it a convenient snack for the kids and not messy to eat. Because it is made by Gardenia, it is guaranteed safe because these sandwiches are produced in a clean and sanitized environment. Now, moms need not worry about sandwich preparations every morning and can now have more time for their kids. Gardenia pocket sandwich is easy to carry around in their lunch boxes or bags, so kids could bring them to school and enjoy the energizing “baon” during breaktime or in-between playtimes.

The sandwich is baked fresh every day so kids can enjoy chocolate and peanut butter sandwiches anytime and anywhere. While kids are at school or around the neighborhood playing with their friends, any mom would know that their kids need all the energy and nutrition from what they eat. Any mother knows that a growing child who eats all the right healthy food could enjoy more from their childhood, and grow up strong and fit.

Which is why both Gardenia Pocket Sandwich variants are high in iron, which contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin; high in Vitamin B1 that helps release energy from proteins, fats and carbohydrates; and has vitamin A, which is essential for the function of the eyes. Gardenia understands the plight of any mom who wants only the best for their kids. And they hope that with these new Pocket Sandwiches, Gardenia can ease off some of the work load from the busy life of a mom.

For only Php 15.00 (SRP), kids can now enjoy the newest Gardenia Pocket Sandwich, available in leading supermarkets and convenience stores near you. For more information and pocket full of fun, like Gardenia on Facebook at GSnack Treats or visit www.gardenia.com.ph.

WHAT IF YOUR MANUSCRIPT IS READ AND CRITIQUED BY THE MAN WHO DISCOVERED J.K. ROWLING?

Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, is giving a chance to Filipino writers living in Asia to submit a short synopsis and the opening pages of their unpublished chapter book or novel and stand a chance to be shortlisted to receive a review and written feedback by the man who discovered J.K. Rowling, Mr. Barry Cunningham, on their submission.

In partnership with the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY), You Write to Me, I'll Write to You is a manuscript critique initiative of the Scholastic Asian Book Award (SABA) in an effort to further encourage and inspire Asian writers. The manuscript critique initiative aspires to motivate writers while assisting them to get their manuscript in shape and recognizing excellence in Asian writings.

A total of 6 entries (the brief synopses and opening pages of 6 manuscripts) will be shortlisted to receive a review and written feedback from Mr. Cunningham, and only the most outstanding entry from the shortlist will receive a review of the complete manuscript.

“It is truly remarkable to be able to work with a prolific name like Barry Cunningham in the international children’s literature scene to provide his critique and review on unpublished manuscripts written by Filipinos living in Asia,” said Joyce A. Bautista, Trade Manager of Scholastic Philippines. “It will be a privilege to unearth some of the most talented Filipino writers in Asia and a chance not to be missed by them to have their manuscripts critiqued and reviewed by Mr. Cunningham.”

“The birth of this idea came from the Scholastic Asian Book Award (SABA) and we hope that through this initiative, more Filipino writers in Asia will submit their manuscripts to the SABA and stand a chance to get their work published,” she added.

“This is a great opportunity for Filipino writers,” said Tarie Sabido, Chair of the PBBY. “This initiative will stir up even more interest in writing novels for children and teens and will help those who wish to submit to the Scholastic Asian Book Award. Old Rich's Secrets to Lasting Wealth Shared at Network Of Enterprising Women (NEW) Monthly Seminar

Can you really make your money last through generations? This was just one of the questions tackled and answered through Wealth Management 101 organized by the Network for Enterprising Women (NEW) last January 25, 2017 at Fully Booked, Bonifacio High Street, Taguig City.

Richard Gan, an entrepreneur and one of the founders of Wealth Academy was the day's esteemed speaker. During the seminar, he made a comparison between two billionaire families in the late 19th century which are the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers.

The Vanderbilts were considered as the wealthiest family in America in 1800s. Their business started with shipping and railroads that soon expanded into various other areas of industry and philanthropy. They also went on to build great mansions and luxurious summer cottages. Their prominence lasted until the mid-20th century when their family's great possessions were torn down and were sold to museums. On the other hand, the Rockefellers whose humble beginnings started from oil business were able to retain their success and wealth up to this date. This family was able to keep a system of protecting their assets for generations, the kind which Gan introduced to all the participants during the half day event.

According to Gan, having a system and being able to plan ahead is the key in creating, maintaining and protecting one's wealth. This is how the elites are able to keep their status and wealth for generations, as compared to the average entrepreneurs and investors.

An average person as per Gan,  has two columns in his finance sheet – capital (in the form of savings and investments) and expenses. While on the other side of the spectrum, the wealthy people have three columns –capital, expenses, and the additional column on returns. The returns column comes from the dividends they receive from their capital. The key here is to create a plan to make the returns stable and consistently increasing at long term until such time it is more than enough to add more capital and take care of the expenses.

Another point of discussion is the three levels of wealth management: to have the capital as level 1, to secure the capital/ wealth as level 2, and to have the cash flow (business/investments) as level 3. However, Gan pointed out that most people jump into level 3 without having a secured level 1 and 2. And this is why the average Joe when investing and failed always starts from scratch but the wealthy does not. Whether their investment fails or not, they still have an ample left to keep them comfortable.

Wealth Management 101 was among the seminars organized by the Network for Enterprising Women (NEW), a group of aspiring and current women entrepreneurs. NEW's advocacy is to create an environment where there is an exchange of business ideas, sharing of experiences and creating opportunities for women to trigger entrepreneurship. The goal of NEW is to uplift women to follow their dreams and shatter the stereotype that women can only be wives and mothers.

Monthly gatherings which includes seminars like the Wealth Management 101, are all part of the organizations' many activities. Following the success of the event, NEW is also preparing for its annual women conference on March 4, 2017 at the New World Hotel from 8:00 AM to 12:00 NN tagged as the "10th Annual Women Entrepreneurs Conference". This yearly culmination includes esteemed speakers and celebrated entrepreneurs which are set to inspire and help women in fulfilling their entrepreneurial dreams.
