Is your child a brat? Here’s how to deal with it

Parents know all too well how difficult it is to deal with a child’s tantrums. When a child reaches pre-schooler age, this problematic behaviour comes out and parents, not really knowing what to do, just grin and bear it, and just basically brace for the inevitable.

Children can often display “bratty” behaviour either towards their parents or other people because they cannot properly articulate their feelings yet or struggle with handling their emotions.

At this age, behaviour regulation, or the ability to use self-control to behave in socially acceptable ways is not well developed yet. This can manifest as tantrums and are sometimes triggered by an outburst of emotions such as anger, frustration, anxiety, and irritability.

To avoid these behaviours among pre-schoolers, parents should learn how to develop and nurture their child’s emotional intelligence by teaching them how to better understand and control their emotions.

In his book entitled, “Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child; The Heart of Parenting,” Dr. John Gottman offers tips on howparents can better deal with their child’s emotional outbursts.

He advises parents to become more aware of their child’s emotions. The first step to improving their behaviour is to recognize that there is an array of feelings that a child has to deal with, such as disappointment or anger, which they might not be able to completely understand yet, or know how to handle.

Parents should also be more observant and listen to what their child is trying to say or express. They should be able to validate their child’s emotions, empathizing with them, and making them understand that what they are feeling is normal.

Dr. Gottman further recommends helping the child to find the words that best identifies what they are feeling. Labelling these correctly can help them better deal with their emotions. It likewise helps the parents themselves be more aware of what their child is going through.

Aside from a parent’s guidance, proper nutrition plays a vital role towards developing a pre-schooler’s emotional intelligence or more commonly known as “EQ”.

A recent breakthrough in pediatric nutrition is the milk fat globule membrane or MFGM. It is the milk fat’s coating which contains life-enhancing components. MFGM supports a child’s IQ development and is clinically proven to improve behavioural regulation among children.

A study[1] conducted by Genevieve Veereman-Wauters established that children who consumed formula enriched with MFGM demonstrated significantly improved parent-reported scores for behavioral regulation compared to children receiving control formula without MFGM enrichment.

But what’s really exciting experts is that for the first time in history, MFGM can be extracted from cow’s milk and added to a children’s milk formula: only in Enfagrow A+ Four.

Given the most recent advances in pediatric nutrition, parents can now make healthier choices for their children, enabling and empowering them to better understand their child’s “bratty” behaviour, and knowing that they now can do something about it.

The Medical City Offers Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant

The Institute of Personalized Molecular Medicine (IPMM) of premier health institution The Medical City (TMC) offers bone marrow and stem cell transplantation which have evolved into the standard of care for many people with hematologic cancers and other blood disorders.

For patients who have certain malignancies of the blood and bone marrow such as leukemias and lymphomas, or autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus and erythematosus, or other blood-related disorders including aplastic anemia and thalassemia major, bone marrow transplant has been part of the standard treatment regimen, backed by large and long-term studies on efficacy.

Although the buzz term of “stem cells” has only recently come to the limelight, the science and technology behind its utility to treat certain diseases has been present in some form or another since the late 1930s.

Back in those early days, physicians and scientists already saw the potential of these cells for illnesses involving the bone marrow, even garnering the Nobel Prize . The process, known as a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or HSCT, has remained mostly the same since then, but with some very important technological and clinical improvements. It is also more commonly called a bone marrow transplant.

In the past, patients who needed a stem cell transplant received a “bone marrow transplant” because the stem cells were collected from the bone marrow. Today, stem cells may also be collected from the blood, instead of the bone marrow. For this reason, they are now called stem cell transplants.

The bone marrow is a part of your bones that makes blood cells. Marrow is the soft, spongy tissue inside the bones. It contains cells called “hematopoietic” stem cells which can turn into several other types of cells. They can turn into more bone marrow cells or they can turn into any type of blood cell.

Certain cancers and other diseases keep hematopoietic stem cells from developing normally. If they are not normal, neither are the blood cells that they make. A stem cell transplant gives you new stem cells and these new stem cells can make new, healthy blood cells.

There are two types of stem cell transplant - autologous and allogeneic. For an autologous stem cell transplant, the patient’s own stem cells are removed from his or her bone marrow or peripheral blood before the transplant. The cells are stored until they are needed for the transplant. Then for example, a patient with myeloma gets treated with high-dose chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells. When this is complete, the stored stem cells are infused back into the patient’s blood. This type of transplant is a standard treatment for patients with multiple myeloma.

In an allogeneic stem cell transplant, the patient gets blood-forming stem cells from another person – the donor. The best treatment results occur when the donor’s cells are closely matched to the patient’s cell type and the donor is closely related to the patient, such as a brother or sister. Allogeneic transplant is usually done for acute leukemias and other hematologic malignancies

Both autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant can be performed at the IPMM of The Medical City.

" At The Medical City IPMM, each patient’s treatment can be personalized and tailored uniquely, ensuring safety and efficacy because of the presence of cutting-edge technology coupled with the expertise of internationally-trained specialists in  the fields of Hematology and Oncology, Transplantation, and Infectious Diseases," says  Dr. Alma R. Calavera, hematologist and transplant specialist.

The IPMM has a team of specialists dedicated to bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. The team is composed of hematologists, transplant specialists, nurses with special training and experience in bone marrow and stem cell transplant, critical care, hematology and oncology, nutritionists, pharmacists, and other allied healthcare staff.

The institute also has a dedicated nursing unit on the 12th floor with six positive pressure for patients with compromised immune systems. These specially designed rooms ensure proper air flow to protect both patient and healthcare worker.

"Bone marrow and stem cell transplant are being done here in the Philippines, at The Medical City, thus, there's no more need to go abroad for this procedure," she adds.
The IPMM is a unit of The Medical City focused on the ethical delivery of personalized molecular medicine treatments. The backbone of the IPMM is Regenerative Medicine, a revolutionary field involving the engineering of cells and other biomaterials with the goals of restoring organ function lost or impaired due to disease or injury, and improving the quality of life.

IPMM is one of the very few accredited Human Stem Cell and Cell-based Therapy Programs in the country, with accreditation granted by the Department of Health  in November 2014.

Coca-Cola partners with Congressman Nograles for STAR Program in Davao City

Coca-Cola Philippines and Davao City 1st District Representative, Congressman Karlo Nograles, entered into a Memorandum of Agreement to expand the implementation of the Sari-sari Store Training and Access to Resources (STAR) Program to the women small business owners in the area.

The Coca-Cola 5by20 STAR Program is designed for women micro-entrepreneurs who own and manage sari-sari stores or carinderias, with the goal of addressing the barriers they face by providing an enabling environment for business success. The STAR Program has three components: access to training, access to resources, and access to peer mentoring. The STAR Program is implemented in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and reputable microfinance institutions and cooperatives operating at the regional level.

“We are continuously expanding the coverage of the program by partnering with key government officials and offices. The first district of Davao has one of the largest populations of women micro-entrepreneurs. Together with Congressman Karlo Nograles, we will reach a larger audience and bring the program to those who can benefit from it the most,” said Gilda Maquilan, 5by20 Lead, Sustainability Manager of Coca-Cola Philippines.

The 1st District of Davao City covers the central business district and neighboring suburbs, where a great concentration of micro and small enterprises are located. The office of Congressman Nograles will identify the qualified women for the program and provide the training venue, among others.

“The empowerment of women is at the core of our platform. Over the years, we have helped women in our district through our various livelihood programs. The Coca-Cola STAR Program is a great opportunity to enhance the capabilities of our women micro-entrepreneurs and help them provide more for their families,” said Nograles.

The Coca-Cola STAR Program is part of the 5by20 global initiative of The Coca-Cola Company, which aims to empower 5 million women within its value chain by 2020. The program initially targeted Filipino women engaged in micro-retail enterprise such as sari-sari stores but has expanded to include women in other marginalized sectors since its launch in 2011.

Today, the Coca-Cola STAR Program is implemented in over 54 locations nationwide and has impacted more than 80,000 women. The program has continuously embraced other sectors including distressed female overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) through a partnership with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and the National Reintegration Center for OFWs of the Department of Labor and Employment, beneficiaries of the government’s conditional cash transfer program or the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development–National Capital Region, Artisan Women of Tondo, and women who are in disaster-stricken areas.

The Coca-Cola STAR Program is also supported by Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines, Alay sa Kaunlaran, Inc. (ASKI), First Community Cooperative (FICCO), Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation, Inc. (NWTF), ASA Philippines, and National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCCO).

THE DANGERS OF SIDE EFFECTS PRESENTED AS MAIN EFFECTS

In the medical world, proper use of words is highly called for because a simple mistake could complicate things usually unwanted for the patients. Because this field has full of jargons that mostly are too technical to not easily be sifted and digested by the general public, putting them in a layman’s term is indeed helpful.

A good example of which are the words “side effect” and “main effect”. These, are more often than not, interchanged or used instead of the other. Doing so is not just wrong but also dangerous to the people’s health.

A side effect of any substance pertains to the result beyond the main or primary action that is intended by the physician giving drug prescription. The doctor, likewise, foresees this extra consequence.

For instance, the patient might not be conscious of the side effect of unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body while using vasodilator drug called Minoxidil to treat hypertension. The physician, nevertheless, is very well aware about it, as well as other implications, such as burning or irritation of the eye, itching, and redness or irritation at the treated area. By and large, doctors suggest that patients should ignore the side effects unless serious and often alert the sick persons about their likelihood.

But not all the side effects are boon. They are bane, too, hence, they are often used as a therapeutic benefit in the pharmaceutical industry. Like the Minoxidil which, initially was developed to treat high blood pressure. People taking it reported an unusual side effect: Hair began to grow on various parts of their bodies. In this case, the downside of the drug is controlled and employed for a beneficial and therapeutic effect judiciously. It is noted that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved prescription of two percent (2%) Minoxidil topical solution for hair loss in men in 1988 and for women in 1992.

An adverse effect, on the other hand, is identified as an outcome wherein the reaction occurs over and beyond the main and wanted action of a medicine. Both the physician and the patient don’t know about it as a consequence of taking such treatment. It can happen simply due to incorrect dosage. Undesirably, this is very harmful as it can exacerbate the prognosis of the disease. Occasionally, if the adverse effect is too serious, there might be a need for hospitalization.

Just like the Sildenafil Citrate— a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Its most common adverse reactions (≥ 2%) include headache, flushing, dyspepsia, abnormal vision, nasal congestion, back pain, myalgia, nausea, dizziness and rash. Patients should seek emergency treatment if an erection lasts over four hours. Patients should stop Sildenafil Citrate and seek medical care if a sudden decrease or loss of hearing and also that of vision in one or both eyes.

Since side effects paired with adverse effects can be fatal and need to be reversed or given antidote immediately, a very extra cautious effort not to interchange them with the main effects in the prescription process must be always observed. After all, it’s the lives of patients at stake here.

It’s ironic to note that people who seek treatments for their ailments or to prolong their lives become sicker or morbidly end up six feet underground simply because of such medical error. So, it’s still best to deal with health conditions like hair loss the natural way, especially with NOVUHAIR that offers the safe and natural effects.

With 19 natural ingredients—mostly standardized herbal extracts, essential oils and co-factor nutrients—it does not only help prevent the hair loss malady, but also aid in stimulating growth of the “crowning glory.” Set aside those chemical-based topical scalp solutions out there. Choose natural, choose NOVUHAR!

7th Jollibee Family Values Awards reveals 15 new finalists

CELEBRATING THE HEROISM OF FAMILIES.  The 7th Jollibee Family Values Awards Judges (sitting, from left) Jollibee Group Foundation Executive Director Gisela Tiongson, actress and host Dimples Romana, columnist Audrey Tan-Zubiri, parenting and relationship consultant Maribel Dionisio, Coca-Cola Philippines Public Affairs and Communications Manager Sam Sanchez (representing Atty. Jollibee has revealed a new batch of hero families vying for the 7th Jollibee Family Values Awards (JFVA). The annual search for outstanding families has named 15 finalists, from hundreds of entries submitted from all over the country and abroad.

After a rigorous screening process, five families from Luzon, five from Metro Manila, two from the Visayas, one from Mindanao, and two from the United States were handpicked to complete JFVA’s finalist slate.

Among the finalists are: Acula Family (Taguig), Felix Family (Pasay City), Lumbao Family (Pasig City), Matti Family (Taguig City), Rodriguez Family (Quezon City), Arquiza Family (Camarines Norte), Casaje Family (Rizal), Dickson Family (Abra), Macalintal Family (Oriental Mindoro), Mallari Family (Rizal), Caballero Family (Negros Oriental), Drake Family (Bohol), and Borela Family (General Santos City).

Two OFW families, Castro Family (San Jose, California), and Salangsang Family (Sacramento, California), are also included in JFVA’s top nominees.

The finalists will vie for the six JFVA Family Awards and six Special Citations during the Gabi ng Parangal para sa Pamilyang Pilipino, the search’s culminating event, on October 11 at Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Jollibee’s 11-member panel of judges, co-chaired by Senator Sonny Angara and Father Jett Villarin of Ateneo de Manila University, will determine the winners of this year’s search.  The body is also tasked with confirming the JFVA partners’ recommendations for special citations.

First-time judge Fr. Villarin shares, “This is an eye opener for me. I have worked with Jollibee on several fronts, but this one, it’s heartening. I think that Jollibee is on target when it comes to values being honed, not only in individuals or groups, but as a family.”

His co-chair, Senator Angara, agrees: “Fr. Jett is man of the cloth and I’m a man of the law, but in both areas, the family is (considered) the basic unit. You want to build a better society? Start with the family.”

Jollibee’s Flores says, “It is a monumental task for us to identify the JFVA’s winners, but a joyful one nonetheless. We are grateful for all families who have joined us over the years and have, no doubt, poured their heart and resources into their advocacies.”

Five exemplary families and one OFW family will each receive a P300,000 cash prize, Jollibee gift certificates worth P10,000, and a trophy designed by renowned sculptor Michael Cacnio. A P50,000 cash prize, Jollibee gift certificates worth P3,000, and a special plaque will also be conferred by Jollibee along with its citation partners to families with the following advocacies: Education (co-presented with National Bookstore), Environment (Maynilad), Children (Children’s Hour), Youth Empowerment (AIESEC) and PWDs (National Council for Disability Affairs.

Cebu Pacific to provide airlift support to wounded soldiers, cops in Marawi

Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB) will be providing airlift support to military and police personnel wounded in action (WIA) in Marawi City. On top of the free airlift on Cebu Pacific flights, the WIA government troops will also get baggage allowance of up to 40 kilograms.

In cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), this initiative aims to augment air support by the Philippine Air Force by helping move wounded government troops from field hospitals in the area to larger medical facilities of the AFP and PNP. Through this, field medical stations can be declogged, giving way for wounded soldiers and police personnel who need immediate medical attention.

"It is with deep gratitude that we accept this kind gesture of support by Cebu Pacific led by its President and CEO, Mr Lance Gokongwei, in the airlift of our heroes Wounded in Action in Marawi. This will not just afford our troops immediate treatment in hospitals that offer better facilities to aid their speedy recovery, but a meaningful gesture to make your Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines feel that their sacrifices are being recognized and appreciated," says Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo, Chief of the AFP's Public Affairs Office.

The officers and rank-and-file of the Philippine National Police and our families are grateful for this magnanimous expression of kindness and compassion by the management of Cebu Pacific to provide life-saving medical evacuation to policemen who are wounded in fighting local terrorists in Mindanao. This is not the first time that Cebu Pacific extended a helping hand to our troops. We cannot thank them enough for keeping the Filipino spirit of ‘Bayanihan’ alive in such crucial time of emergency,” says Police Chief Superintendent Dionardo Carlos, Chief of the PNP Public Information Office.

WIA government troops who are fit enough for commercial flights can be accommodated on Cebu Pacific flights from Cagayan de Oro (Laguindingan Airport), and flown to any CEB domestic destination. Currently, Cebu Pacific has direct flights from Cagayan de Oro to Bacolod; Tagbilaran, Bohol; Cebu; Davao; Iloilo and Manila. By July 26, CEB will also fly direct between Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga City.

On top of the airlifting of WIA government troops, CEB is also airlifting cargo of relief goods and other humanitarian assistance for affected residents. Donors may coordinate with the GMA Kapuso Foundation or the Philippine Business for Social Progress for packing and transport arrangements of their donated goods.

Cebu Pacific will continue to provide free cargo support for relief goods and other essential items for displaced residents of Marawi City  and adjacent areas from various organizations, most notably the Department of Social Welfare and Development. These include food and water; medicines; bandages; clothing and other necessities. The airline has provided equipment support to the Office of Civil Defense in the transport of humanitarian assistance.

Turning brushing a fun activity

Brushing teeth is something that we need to do three times a day for health reasons. Yet many people still miss on doing this for different reasons.

Sometimes, our kids also have a hard time doing this so parents should really make sure to guide them and see to it that this is fulfilled every meal.

Now, how can you make brushing more fun for the family especially for the kids? Here are some suggestions:

1. Provide your children a toothbrush to play with. Let him/ her brush his stuffed toy animal or doll's teeth while you brush his.

2. Let your kids brush your teeth, using your toothbrush of course. (Don't forget to do it again yourself later.)

3. Cheer with each tooth brushed as if it's one exciting event.

4. Use a brush that has their favorite characters.

The gift of healthy ‘crowning glory’ fit for the queen this Mother’s Day

CLICHE it may be, but there’s indeed a woman behind the person we are today. And that’s no less than her—our mother. We used to call her nanayinay‘naymama, mommy or simply mom. Needless to say, she deserves more than that given the pivotal role she fulfills in rearing us from childhood to adulthood and possibly for the rest of our lives.

There may be opposing beliefs whether that greater maternal instinct is biologically predetermined or socially imposed, but everyone would agree that a mother is hardwired to love and care about the whole family, especially the children, all the time. For better or worse, it’s always the welfare of everyone at home on top of her priority.
No wonder she’s an epitome of a doting human being that touches everybody’s life. So, it’s but right to honor and return all the favors she has done for us. And what a better way to do this than this Mother’s Day.

Still drooling over the ways on how to spend this time of the year again with her? Well, you may opt for the basics of gift-giving from simple trinkets to expensive items. But take note, your appreciation of her is not equated by the tag price of your present. It’s the thought that counts, as an adage says.

You may consider a set of hankies that will bring back the memory of her wiping out her tears of happiness upon knowing that she’s conceiving a li’l creature inside her womb. That’s you, of course. A loose yet comfy clothes shall make her remember that sort of a duster or preggy dress she wore in the laborious yet exciting “nine months” of gestation.

Why not a pillow that she could hug as tight as she embraced you after giving birth, or maybe a brassiere for protection of the very bosom she fed you with during infancy? A bed will bring to her mind your tot years when you started to crawl and roll over it freely.

Shoes are a girl’s best friend, too, like your mom. Either sky-high heels or flattering flats, there’s a pair to match every bit of her fantasy. For as long as it brings comfort to her feet, it's more than enough to reciprocate the ease you had when you took your first walk with her guidance back then. If it isn’t her thing, though, a flip-flop will cause her to think that she also disciplined you through the proverbial “rule of slipper” hit on your buttocks while you were growing up.

Much to her delight, a bling ring will be worthy of your dear investment to show your deep appreciation of her just like when she never failed to recognize you with a pat on the back for simple good deeds or a job well done in your lifetime.

Stuck for an idea yet? Here’s a simple but meaningful token of gratitude that for sure will make a big difference and, eventually, pull off a surprise for the celebrant herself: The NOVUHAIR 3-in-1 pack which includes the topical scalp lotion, herbal shampoo and conditioner. Yes, you read it right.

Still not convinced enough, why don’t you spray a liberal amount of NOVUHAIR topical scalp lotion onto your mom’s scalp and massage it for five to ten minutes. You may not even know that with such a plain gesture of yours, it can melt her heart as it reminds her of the past when she used to do the same thing while you were still young, either as a trick to put you easily on a slumber or merely a relief every time you got sick. Those caressing hands of yours, likewise, imbibe your act of giving back the “natural care from mothers” like her.

Whatever impression it may have on her, what’s tangible she could gain is that you’re giving her nature’s gift of health. NOVUHAIR Topical Scalp Lotion is so unique that it combines 19 natural herbs, essential oils and co-factor nutrients––all working synergistically to help address hair problems from growth to vanishing. This breakthrough product helps to rejuvenate, nourish and maintain the moist of her tress from root to tip, aids in stimulating the growth of her hair and helps prevent it from excessive falling, while improving the overall appearance.

More than anything else, NOVUHAIR 3-in-1 pack may be one of the most precious gifts that your mom could ever receive in her entire life. Well, she’s the most important woman in your life after all. Hence, she deserves to be treated like a queen with that vibrant, bouncy and shiny “crowning glory.”

NOVUHAIR 3-in-1 pack is beyond compare. So, don’t think twice to wrap it as your present for her this Mother’s Day and, if ever, for life.
