YakitoriQ: A New Barbecue in Town

Here' a great news for aspiring entrepreneurs out there.

Last May 12, the 4th Philippine Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and Franchise Expo with the theme “Grow Your Business” was presented by Tradecon Inc. and Esquire Financing Inc. at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

For three days, it brought together various businesses and brands which included franchising, direct selling, retailing and networking. Randell Tiongson, business columnist and financial adviser, and Chinkee Tan, TV and radio host and wealth coach, gave motivational talks on how change in the Filipino mindset can help empower each one in attaining our financial goals. Esquire Financing, Inc. also presented its service, providing intelligent funding and strategic guidance with its principle that SMEs should never remain SME’s because every business has the brimming capacity to become large.

Part of the event was the unveiling of new business ideas to the public. One of the most-visited booths in the venue is the newest barbecue concept in town: YakitoriQ!

YakitoriQ is the brainchild of entrepreneur-business consultant Mr. Jorge Noel Wieneke III, dubbed “Mr. KaAsenso” of PLDT, and known for his advocacy on entrepreneurial education for those who wish to put up their “mini negosyo” or have plans to expand their business.

Mr. Wieneke was a former advertising guy and was responsible for putting up “Potato Corner,” the country’s first flavored French Fries brand that revolutionized the food cart business. He is also a founding member of the Association of Filipino Franchisers, Inc., one of the biggest franchise associations in the Philippines today, and teaches Applied Entrepreneurship at the Ateneo de Manila’s Center for Continuous Education (CCE).

In April 2008, Mr. Wieneke established First Asian Food Project Inc. (FAFPI) was started  with a dream of bringing the traditionally expensive Japanese Cuisine to the common Filipino. He discovered that Japanese food need not to be expensive, through the help of the Okuya family. FAFPI started with a branch in Makati and in Quezon City, supported by a commissary. Today, it has 6 branches, 3 of which are franchise operated.

Mr. Wieneke heads team of winners, partnering up with successful individuals in their own right. Together, they compose the management team of FAFPI, successfully expanding the business to where it is now.

Yakitori grilled chicken, is commonly a Japanese type of skewered chicken. The term "Yakitori" can also refer to skewered food in general. For only P16 per stick, one can enjoy the real-meat YakitoriQ. One stick with rice is already fulfilling at P26 or you may want to taste the original or American version on two separate sticks with rice for P42. They also introduce chicken isaw, pork isaw and pork tenga in yakitori style.

YakitoriQ stores will open next month in Victory Mall, MCU, Greenhills Shopping Center, Tutuban Center, in Food Street, St. Francis Square and Robinson’s Ermita.

Have a Happy Mommy experience with Lotte Xylitol

Mother’s Day is all about making mothers out there feel very special and today, Lotte Xylitol, the country’s leading dental health gum, and Working Mom magazine and Lifestyle Network, will make Mother’s Day 2012 even special with the “Happy Mommy” event.

Happening at the TriNoMa Mall along North Avenue and EDSA in Quezon City, the activity focuses on giving the dear mommies out there a greater reason to celebrate the day that gives importance to their role as the stabilizer, caretaker and light of the home, together with Lotte Xylitol that helps us keep our teeth healthy and strong.

During the event, Lotte Xylitol provides Moms out there the opportunity to have their teeth checked by dental health care professionals. Through a dentist consultation session, Mommies will be asked to fill up a “risk assessment” form. This form will be of great assistance to the dentists in determining a Mom’s dental health state and in the whole consultation process to give a more accurate and detailed information and help Mommies protect their teeth and keep that toothy white smile.

The “Happy Mommy” event is also the venue for the soft launch of Lotte Xylitol’s Facebook fan page. Simply “LIKE” the page to get freebies like Lotte Xylitol blister packs. Or, get free photo opportunities at the Lotte Xylitol photo booth. All photos taken for the entire day will then uploaded to the Lotte Xylitol Facebook page.

And the best part of it is after the event, a contest will be held to choose the best smile among the photos of Mommies or Mommies with their kids. The photos with the best smile wins a special prize from Lotte Xylitol.

Other Lotte Xylitol activities during “Happy Mommy” include the popular “pachinko” game, plus other booth activities for the kids or the kids with their Moms—and Dads, too! There will also be activities happening on the main stage, which includes a special appearance of the Lotte Xylitol mascot.

Aside from the TriNoMa, the “Happy Mommy” event will also happen simultaneously in 5 other areas such as Glorietta 5, Bonifacio High Street, Market!Market!, Alabang Town Center and at the Marquee Mall.

Lotte Xylitol, plus its new variant, Lotte Xylitol Neo, is a dental health gum that has xylitol, a natural sugar that prevents the proliferation of tooth decay-causing bacteria, and also has “calcium phosphate” that helps re-mineralize or rebuild teeth by bringing back lost minerals in order to make it stronger and healthier. With just 3-4 pellets per day, keep your teeth strong and healthy for that wonderful and gleaming smile.

Innovation from a Mom's Heart

“Mother knows best” is a line you must have heard so many times before. And why not? It’s a simple statement that carries a grain of truth; after all, a child is one who had burst out of his or her mother’s womb. A mother is one who has only the best in mind for her son or daughter. She’s one who’s willing to sacrifice much just to make sure that her child gets nothing but the best.

What if a mom has but an only son who is so close to her that she and other people call the son her shadow? All the more! He’ll be her precious one that she’ll do all things possible to give him nothing but the best. Such is the case between entrepreneur extraordinaire Suzanne “Apple” Morales and 12-year old son Aiden. Mother and son are inseparable. It’s for a good reason that friends call the son the mother’s shadow. Where Apple is, the young man Aiden also is. As a result, they have a very strong link. He is the sweetest boy ever to her. And this son learns business from Mom pretty fast.

Apple left a lucrative job in the US with reputable global brand Lancome under L’Oreal. She started with the company while going to school at the young age of 16 where she first worked as a fragrance adviser then beauty adviser who roast from the ranks then account executive then became as a regional sales manager of both the west coast and the east coast. She flew with her son to the Philippines, with her appointment as National Sales and Marketing Manager for the Lancome under L’Oreal Philippines.

Apple Morales quit her well-paying job after all of 14 years of service in order to spend more time with son and to have a chance to apply her talent in business management to try to make money through her personal business. So Apple took one big, bold step: after a six-year tenure in the Philippines out of her 14-year career in L’Oreal. “Immediately after I left, I did simultaneous consultancies in the Philippines and in some other countries and then I put up my first business venture which gave vent to my self-expression and creativity.” She designed and marketed high-heeled ladies shoes for export.

“Simultaneously, I managed and got a franchise of ActiveFun, a pioneering company offering a children’s playground,” she continues. “With that venture, I found myself often in the company of children and my son was always with me. He would bring in clients to play in our facility at the SM City North Edsa,” she shares. “Basically, he would do flyering and he would invite children to ActiveFun.”

Soyami idea started in active fun just originally to serve healthy snacks to children in her playground. Apple did R & D in her own kitchen and came up with nutritious and good-tasting soya chips. It was mother and son who brainstormed on what was to be the soya chips brand and they came up with Soyami—from soya and yummy. Apple registered a company under the name AM Global Works Marketing Corp., to manufacture Soyami Soya Chips.

They love Soy so they experimented on soy products that was not yet in the market. These chips have by now gained the reputation of being a healthy snack option, especially among snack chips lovers. A healthy alternative to chips that are considered junk food and an option to fruits and nuts as healthy snack fare, Soyami Chips now enjoy the distinction of being the country’s first and only real soya-based snack. They then offered Soyami Chips in its three variants—white cheddar, pizza and original flavors—now available in leading supermarkets nationwide and in fitness gyms.

Why soya? To this Apple has lengthy answers backed up by tons of research done on soya, among these: (1) soya is fiber rich and hence aids in the digestive system, (2) it is low in calorie count and sugar, (3) it is an excellent source of protein, (4) it has the most abundant properties of calcium and iron compared with other legumes, (6) it contains phospholipids, specifically lecithin, that is crucial for healthy brain cells, and (7) it contains isoflavone compounds possessing a substance called Genistein, that helps keep the body lean and produce fewer and smaller fat cells.

Thus, among others, soya can contribute in building healthy bones while producing hemoglobin or red blood cells needed for transporting oxygen in the body, a benefit that befits active and growing children. According to factoids.com, the yield of protein from soybeans is about twice that of meat, 12 times that of milk and four times that of eggs.

Soyami Soya Chips, made of non-genetically modified organism (GMO) high in protein, no msg, low in sodium and low in calories. Soya prevents obesity, diabetes and some food-related diseases in any way, contrary to food with little or no nutritional value that contain high levels of flavor enhancers, saturated fats, salt, and sugar minus the required dietary fiber intake.

Never one to stop innovating, Apple Morales recently came up with 11 yummy flavors of delicious soya-based ice cream available in Soyami Ice Cream cart that are scene stealers at Festival Supermall. Now, both young and old can enjoy great tasting and nutritious ice cream without fear of ingesting so much sugar. Soyami ice cream is zero dairy, zero cream, zero eggs, zero cholesterol and low in fat.  For interested to franchise, you may contact Soyami office at Congressional, Quezon City at numbers 215-9891 or 376-3135. My ZALORA Wishlist

Heaven-sent!

We often utter these words every time we receive things that really made our day.  For me, these things can be as simple yet heart-warming like a cute smile from my son or a sweet peck from my husband.  It can be also be something big like the announcement about your job promotion or winning a major prize in a raffle.  But I think, and most of you will agree that the most heaven-sent thing anyone can experience in life is a granted wish.

I was a little sentimental one Sunday morning when I found some old photo albums dusted inside a box when I did a general cleaning at home that day.  I took a pause for a while and started flipping the pages of the albums containing family pictures which some are more than 20 years old.  I did a little walk down the memory lane and could not help but be amazed on how time flies so fast.

It also made me realize that I might have been a little busy with work lately that I have sacrificed spending quality time with the people who really matters to me most.  I wish I can make them happy or at least do something for them to show that I am still thinking about them in the midst of my ever-toxic work schedule.  Is this still possible for someone like me who has an eight-to-five job and other activities that eat up a few hours from my sleeping time?

Well, I just found out it’s a yes!  Thank God for online shopping and I can still show thoughtfulness to my love ones with just a few clicks of my fingers anywhere and anytime.   But of course, we should only transact with the trusted names in online shopping.  One website I can recommend is Zalora, your one stop online destination for everything fashion in the Philippines. Bringing you an insight on global trends, we feature your favorite international designers and the most relevant Filipino brands.

For me, ZAROLA is a Zestful Alternative and Legitimate Online Retailer Anytime.

Where else can you find a wide array of great gift finds that also offers a 30-day return policy, FREE shipping nationwide, same day delivery and easy payment methods (Cash on Delivery, Over  the counter, credit card, Paypal and internet banking) on top of their quality products.  It’s safe, it’s easy and it’s definitely heaven-sent!

Speaking of heaven-sent, I am making my Zalora wishlist but each item in it is not meant for me.  I love to have them so I can give them as gifts to the five people who I meet and made my life a heaven.  Through this simple gesture, I hope to at least make them feel how important they are to me and that I appreciate all the things they have done to make my life a worthwhile journey.

Hang Ten Men's Slim Straight
A pair of jeans for my father.  I still remember when I was young, my father would tell me stories about how he shared a pair of pants with his cousins and friends.  He made it sound very amusing when he narrates that somebody would wear the pants from morning to afternoon and at night time, it was his time to use it for a date in the plaza.  Deep inside, I felt a pinch in my heart because he never let me experience to be in situations like that.  He worked hard so every one of his eight children has clothes they can call their own.

Axis BlackWatch for Women
A wristwatch for my mother.  One good lesson that my mother taught me is the value of time.  She used to tell me that if I have a meeting, I should not be there on time rather I should be there before the actual time of the meeting.  This is to avoid cramming and haggardness and making the other person wait.  It’s funny because I really can’t remember seeing my mom wearing a wristwatch.  I know my father gave her once but she never used it because she feels it will just be a hassle in doing house chores.  If I will give her a watch, I’ll hand it to her with a gift certificate to a spa clinic and a note, “It’s time to relax, Mama!”

Beatles shirt by Happy Days
A cool Beatles shirt for my Tito Nonong.  Five years ago, I experienced one of the saddest chapters of my life.  In August 2007, I lost my first child. Just after a few months, my beloved lolo passed away.  I was so depressed with what had happened in my life that I just feel like I wanna lie down on one place all day and wait for someone who care to feed me.  I remember that my uncle was one of the people who cheered me up with his crazy ways. He gifted me with his latest paintings and would play old tunes with his guitar.  His Beatles medley was the best!  (Even if he’s off-key sometimes) :)

Budapest Savvy Backpack by Europak
A backpack for my husband.  I am just blessed that I have someone who is willing to go with me where ever I want to go. He says that he is my biggest fan and would follow me in every step that I’ll make.  I’ve been up and down, figuratively and literally, and my husband is always there to accompany me without hesitation and questions asked.  This time, I want him to have this bag and pack things up and ask him to take me to anywhere he wants to go.  If there is anywhere in the world that I want to be forever, it’s beside him.

Otto black school shoes for kids
A pair of school shoes for my son Charles. The greatest feeling that I’ve ever felt in my entire life was the first time my son Charles called me “Mommy.”  To borrow a famous answer from the Ms. Universe pageant, “Being a mother is the real essence of being a woman.” The best part of it is that I get to experience this wonderful moment every day. A pair of black school shoes represents my son’s first step towards his journey to the real world.  And this mommy will definitely be guiding him all the way for as long as I live.

My wishlist contains awesome items I intend to give as gifts to my love ones.  Of course, there are products in Zalora’s online catalogue that I fancy and consider to buy for myself in the future.  The wide selection in the website is every shopper’s paradise.

It’s just that I thought of my family first while browsing the site and saw the opportunity to at least make up for the lost I could have spent with them with a simple gesture of gift-giving.  I believe the people behind Zalora created their online shopping site only for their customer’s personal needs but also a way to share love, love, love to others!
